CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso Urges Nigerians to Stay and Build the Nation

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, has called on Nigerians to reconsider emigrating, popularly referred to as "Japa."

Speaking at the 59th annual Bankers Dinner organized by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Lagos, Cardoso reassured citizens of the CBN's commitment to creating an economy where businesses and individuals can prosper.

“It is not a good idea to Japa at this stage,” Cardoso said, presenting two critical reasons for his position.

Firstly, he highlighted the potential loss for those who sell their assets at low prices before leaving the country. “Predators, who are outside looking for bargains, will come, buy those assets for cheap, and later profit when the economy turns around,” he explained.

Secondly, Cardoso encouraged Nigerians to contribute to the nation’s rebuilding efforts. “You want to be part of the solution,” he urged.

“This is a time we need all hands on deck. There are opportunities in the market today, and from my experience, there is a growing interest from international investors in what is happening in Nigeria.”

Cardoso emphasized that international investors recognize Nigeria’s potential and are positioning themselves to benefit from it. He encouraged Nigerians to take similar initiatives, pointing out that the nation’s transformation requires the participation of its people.

While acknowledging the difficulties caused by ongoing economic reforms, the CBN Governor stressed that these measures are aimed at tackling present challenges while laying the foundation for long-term prosperity. “We are building an economy where every individual, every business, and every community can thrive,” he assured.

Cardoso concluded by calling for collaboration among stakeholders to achieve this vision. “This vision will not be achieved by one institution alone. It requires all of usbanks, regulators, businesses, and citizens to work together with steadfast resolve.”

His appeal serves as a reminder that collective effort, resilience, and strategic planning are vital for Nigeria's economic resurgence.
