A disturbing incident has come to light involving a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Kwara State, Nigeria.
She was reportedly assaulted by teachers at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende area of Ilorin, for allegedly failing to greet them properly.
The assault occurred on Thursday, November 28, 2024, when the corps member, whose name has been withheld, visited the school to collect her clearance letter.
According to eyewitness accounts, the situation escalated when a teacher physically attacked the corps member, tearing her NYSC white T-shirt. Another teacher reportedly joined in and slapped her.
The head of Information and Public Relations for the NYSC in Kwara State, Morakinyo Oladipo, confirmed the incident, expressing the scheme's strong displeasure over the matter.
Oladipo assured the public that necessary steps were being taken to address the assault and ensure justice for the corps member.
"The NYSC has formally informed the state government through the Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry of Youth, our supervisory ministry," Oladipo said. "The state government has acted swiftly since the news broke out."
He added that the corps member would be reposted to another location to help her recover from the trauma of the incident.
"The scheme will seek redress for the attack against the corps member," Oladipo stated, emphasizing that the NYSC is committed to protecting its members during their national assignments.
Oladipo assured that the law would take its course in punishing those responsible for the assault. "We are expecting a thorough investigation and proper action to be taken against the individuals involved," he said.
The NYSC spokesperson reiterated the scheme's zero tolerance for the mistreatment of its members, emphasizing that the incident would not go unpunished. "Necessary steps will be taken to the extent that the law allows against those who abused the corps member," he concluded.
The incident has sparked outrage, with many calling for stricter measures to protect corps members from such occurrences.
The NYSC program, a mandatory national service initiative, is designed to promote unity and development across Nigeria.
However, incidents like this raise concerns about the safety and treatment of corps members, particularly in remote or underserved communities.
As investigations proceed, the public hopes for swift and decisive action to serve as a deterrent against similar incidents in the future.
